A study on the Gut contents of six Leathery Turtles Dermochelys Coriacea (Linnaeus) (Reptilia: Testudines: Dermochelyidae) from British waters and from the Netherlands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Nierop, M.M. van.
Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have...

Atividade de nidificação de Phrynops Hilarii Duméril & Bibron (Testudines, Chelidae) na Reserva Biológica do Lami, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Bujes,Clóvis Souza.
Nesting activity of the neotropical turtle Phrynops hilarii Duméril & Bibron, 1835 was studied from Feb/94 through Jan/95, with weekly visits at the Lami Biological Reserve (30º15'S, 51º05'W), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Nesting behavior was observed 17 times on three different nest sites. Phrynops hilarii laid in average 11 eggs per clutch (10-14; sd±1; n=17), nests' depth ranged from 100 to 150 mm (x=121.53 mm.sd±12.31; n=17). The species presents stereotiped behaviour common to other Testudines. Temperature inside the nest, just after nesting, ranged between 20-31ºC (x=26.29ºC; sd±2.89; n=17); nest predation during this period was 82.35% (14 of 17 nests). From Aug/29 through Oct/03/95, 220 egg shells was collected next to 21 nests...

CICLOS DE POSTURA ANUAL ex situ DE Rhinoclemmys melanosterna, R. diademata Y DE SUS HÍBRIDOS (Reptilia: Testudines: Emydidae: Batagurinae) Acta biol.Colomb.
RAMÍREZ-PERILLA,JAIME.

Since 1985 the biology and behavior of Phrynops hilarii (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) at São Paulo Zoo is being studied. Feeding behavior is divided in five phases (foraging, approach, capture, dilaceration and ingestion), but not necessarily all of them happen. During phase 1 the food or prey seems to be visually located. During phase 2 the food itens and stationaty preys are approached and examined by olfaction. Moving preys are pursued and there is no olfactory examination. During phase 3 the food is captured by suction. When food is bigger than turtle mouth it is dilacerated by one or both forefeet used alternately (phase 4). Ingestion is accomplished by gradual suction (phase 5). Intra and inter-specific cleptoparasitism was observed. Success in...

Saint-Girons, H..
Comparative histological studies carried out on the nasal cavity of four species of turtles showed that the sea turtles have a more or less regressed olfactive epithelium compared to that of the Emydidae but that their vomeronasal epithelium is more developed. The location of the vomeronasal epithelium in the cavum also differs. The data suggest that the Dermochelyidae were adapted to a strict aquatic life a long time before the Cheloniidae.

Malvasio,Adriana; Gomes,Norma; Farias,Eduardo Cunha.
Individuals of Trachemys dorbignyi (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) less than 12 months old are examined for sexual identification through anatomical study of urogenital system. Histological analysis is used to confirm sexual identification. It is concluded that accurate sexual identification is possible in hatchlings using gonadal morphology. Differences between testes and ovaries are clear so histological analysis is necessary for this species only in case of doubts.

Artificial incubation of 558 eggs from 70 clutches of Trachemys dorbignyi (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) were performed at São Paulo Zoo during 1992 and 1993. Hatching occurred when eggs were incubated between 25 and 31.5oC. Incubation time varied from 54 (at 31.5oC) to 120 days (at 25oC), similarly to Trachemys scripla sspp. Hatchling used the caruncle to made small incisions in the egg shell, latter enlarged by movements of the head and forefeet. Hatching usually lasted from one to two days. Newborn's carapace and plastron showed their natural form few hours after the emergence from the egg shell. During the third or fourth week, caruncle usually disappeared, and yolk sac was completely absorbed. Average (x±sd) measures of newborn were 3.55±0.18cm of...

META-ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF THE FRESHWATER TURTLE AND TORTOISE FAUNA OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
BOCK,Brian C; PÁEZ,Vivian P.
ABSTRACT The citations contained in a recent literature review on the freshwater turtle and tortoise species of Colombia were analyzed. Publishing rates on these species have been increasing exponentially since the 1950s, although many of the publications would not be detected using internet-based literature searches. The most common topics of publications were systematics and phylogeography, nesting ecology, and management. In the 1970s and 1980s, the rate of publishing on the ecology and genetics of Colombian populations lagged behind the rate of publishing on these topics for populations of Colombian freshwater turtle and tortoise species located in other countries, but currently the production of the two regions is comparable. Also, in other countries...

Molecules, morphology, and the monophyly of diapsid reptiles Naturalis
Lee, Michael S.Y..
The morphological and molecular evidence for higher-level reptile relationships is reassessed, A combined analysis of 176 osteological, 40 soft anatomical, and 2903 (1783 aligned) molecular characters in 28 amniote taxa yields the traditional reptile tree. Synapsids (including mammals) are the sister taxon to all other amniotes, including all extant reptiles. Turtles group with anapsid parareptiles and fall outside a monophyletic Diapsida. Within diapsids, squamates and Sphenodon form a monophyletic Lepidosauria, and crocodiles plus birds form a monophyletic Archosauria. This tree is identical to the tree strongly supported by the osteological data alone when fossils are included. In a combined analysis the strong osteological signal linking turtles with...

Phylogenetic relationships among extinct and extant turtles: the position of Pleurodira and the effects of the fossils on rooting crown-group turtles Naturalis
Sterli, J..
The origin and evolution of the crown-group of turtles (Cryptodira + Pleurodira) is one of the most interesting topics in turtle evolution, second perhaps only to the phylogenetic position of turtles among amniotes. The present contribution focuses on the former problem, exploring the phylogenetic relationships of extant and extinct turtles based on the most comprehensive phylogenetic dataset of morphological and molecular data analyzed to date. Parsimony analyses were conducted for different partitions of data (molecular and morphological) and for the combined dataset. In the present analysis, separate analyses of the molecular data always retrieve Pleurodira allied to Trionychia. Separate analysis of the morphological dataset, by contrast, depicts a more...

Presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in captive yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) in the Eastern Amazon Ciência Rural
Miranda,Juliana Maria Santos; Rocha,Katarine de Souza; Monteiro,Louysse Helene; Baia,Ianny Watuzy Monteiro; Monteiro,Thamillys Rayssa Marques; Brito,Jacqueline da Silva; Mesquita,Ellen Yasmin Eguchi; Moraes,Carla Cristina Guimarães de.
ABSTRACT: We describe anti-Leptospira spp. agglutinin in yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis)in the Amazon region. Ninety-eight serum samples from individuals housed at the Bosque Rodrigues Alves Zoobotanical Garden of Amazonia, Belém, PA, Brazil, were subject to the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) using 19 different Leptospira spp. antigen serogroups. Thirty-four of the 98 samples (35%) were reactive, with titers ranging from 100 to 3200, and eight 8 reactive samples (23.5%) co-agglutinated under two or more serovars. The most common serogroup was Hebdomadis (26.9%, 7/26), followed by Semaranga (23%, 6/26), Shermani (19.2%, 5/26), Djasiman (11.5%, 3/26), and Australis (7.7%, 2/26); Bataviae, Javanica, and Sejroewere represented by a...

Reptiles of the municipality of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sousa,Bernadete Maria de; Gomides,Samuel Campos; Hudson,Alexandre de Assis; Ribeiro,Leonardo Barros; Novelli,Iara Alves.
The Atlantic Forest of the state of Minas Gerais, as well as the remnants of this domain in the rest of Brazil, suffers a marked reduction in size and anthropogenic alteration. This habitat degradation is directly reflected in the decrease of species richness within these natural environments. In this sense, the inventory of extant species is necessary to understand the species composition of regions under threat. Despite the great richness of existing reptile species in Minas Gerais, the level of knowledge about the fauna in this state is considered unsatisfactory and very fragmented. The aim of this study was to record the composition of the reptile fauna of the municipality of Juiz de Fora through the revision of specimens housed at the Herpetological...
